In Vedic astrology, a child's Rashi (राशि) — also known as the Moon Sign — is the zodiac sign in which the Moon was positioned at the exact moment of birth. Unlike Western astrology's Sun signs, Hindu astrology considers the Moon to be the most significant celestial influence on a person's mind, emotions, and destiny. The Rashi determines which starting syllables are auspicious for a baby's name, a practice rooted in the ancient science of Nakshatras (lunar mansions).

Each of the 12 Rashis encompasses two-and-a-quarter to three Nakshatras, and each Nakshatra is divided into four Padas (quarters). Every Pada maps to a specific phoneme or syllable. When a pandit calculates the baby's birth chart and identifies the ruling Nakshatra and Pada, the corresponding syllable becomes the recommended starting letter for the child's name. This is the foundation of the Namakaran Sanskar — the sacred Hindu naming ceremony.
