Rivers and Water
Water is sacred in Hindu tradition. The great rivers — Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Narmada, Kaveri — are worshipped as goddesses and have given rise to beautiful names. Ganga (गंगा) — the sacred river. Yamuna (यमुना) — daughter of the Sun. Kaveri (कावेरी) — the southern Ganges. Sarita (सरिता) — a flowing river. Neer (नीर) — water, pure and clear. Vari (वारि) — water, flowing. These names carry the purity and life-giving energy of water.
The Sky and Celestial Bodies
Hindu astronomy and mythology are inseparable. The sky is populated with gods, heroes, and sacred animals. Tara (तारा) — star. Surya (सूर्य) — the Sun. Chandra (चंद्र) — the Moon. Sitara (सितारा) — starlit. Akash (आकाश) — the sky, infinite space. Mihir (मिहिर) — solar rays. Nakshatra (नक्षत्र) — a star, used as both a concept and a name. Tarani (तरणि) — the Sun, one who helps you cross over.
Flora and the Forest
Sanskrit has an extraordinarily rich vocabulary for plants, flowers, and forests. Pallavi (पल्लवी) — new leaves, the first shoots of spring. Pushpa (पुष्प) — flower. Kamala (कमल) — lotus, the flower of enlightenment. Mallika (मल्लिका) — jasmine. Vana (वन) — forest. Vanshika (वंशिका) — flute made of bamboo; also "of the forest." Aranya (अरण्य) — forest, wilderness. Tulsi (तुलसी) — the sacred basil plant, deeply revered in Hindu homes.
Mountains and Earth
The mountains in Hindu cosmology are living deities. Girija (गिरिजा) — daughter of the mountain (another name for Parvati). Achal (अचल) — the immovable mountain. Hemant (हेमंत) — the winter season, golden like snow. Dharitri (धरित्री) — the Earth. Bhumi (भूमि) — the Earth, the ground beneath our feet. Pavitra (पवित्र) — pure as the mountain spring. Shikha (शिखा) — the peak, the summit.
Animals and Birds
Animals hold divine status in Hindu mythology — each god has a vahana (divine vehicle). Hans (हंस) — swan, symbol of purity and discernment. Mayur (मयूर) — peacock, the vehicle of Kartikeya. Hamsa (हंसा) — the celestial swan. Mrinal (मृणाल) — lotus stem, but also evokes the grace of a deer (mriga). Kokila (कोकिला) — the Indian cuckoo (koel), whose song heralds spring. These names bring the grace and energy of the natural world into a child's identity.
